Sports…I don’t get it
December 2nd, 2006Am I the only guy that doesn’t like following sports? We’re going over to my cousins house to watch the UCLA USC football game in an hour. I’m going to hang out. I could care less about the game. I used to follow the Lakers and rarely missed a game, but after talking to a guy I respect at work, I don’t bother. He was telling me that he won’t support professional sports, because it’s all marketing and money. Look how much a sports player can make in a year. It’s more than I’ll make in my lifetime. And they contribute to society, how? A school teacher should get paid that much, not someone who plays sports. It’s all about marketing and money. And they’re supposed to be role models? I don’t think so. I don’t get all the screaming and jumping up and down. I don’t have anything against anyone who likes sports. I just don’t get it. Can someone enlighten me? I guess it’s just like a hobby. Like I like to mountain bike and maintain my bikes. Other people like to watch sports.

I don’t do sport, or even watch sport, not even the Lakers.

It is totally about marketing and money. Then again, so much of all that we do and stimulates our senses and our thoughts is about that, marketing and money.
I don’t watch sports much anymore either. Especially after getting a Tivo, we no longer watch live TV. And never saw the point in watching a game that wasn’t live. They need to put the games online live, then maybe I’d watch again. Or at least have it running in the background.

You’re right. I like watching tv shows and movies and that’s all about marketing and money too. But then I almost never see anymore commercials. Don’t ask me how… hehe

Emmanuel hit the nail on the head, so much of American life is about marketing and money. Everything in the business world, entertainment world, and even nonprofit world, has to have an economic engine to keep it running. Even volunteerism needs marketing to rally the troops for a cause. Exception noted for the mountains that you like biking on, which are maintained by the government, which is funded by tax dollars, which require taxes on people spending money, so we’re back to that marketing and money equation again. :)
