The Connectivity Curse
August 3rd, 2007
We’re having a great time in Carmel. My gravest mistake was that I didn’t plan ahead how I would manage my work connectivity. Since one of my projects is property management, I am constantly being contacted by my tenants for whatever reason. They have access to my cell phone (stupid me!). I am also an internet junky (but who isn’t these days), and am checking work email as well as personal email. It’s been frustrating when I’m spending time with friends or family and then get a call that brings my mind back to work, or I wake up and respond to work emails before I start the day.
This morning, I emailed my real estate broker, and got an autoreply that he was on vacation this week and would check email on Saturday. Doh! I should’ve done that. Too bad I only realized it on the last day of our vacation! But still, we’re having a great time.
I’ll write a longer post about our trip soon. As a teaser: Toby can’t use his feet today and Micah’s limping (nothing too serious), I randomly talked to someone who knew people that I swam with in high school, and last Sunday we unexpectedly parked our car in Berkeley and took the BART into the city. Stay tooned to find out why, and more!

Yeah, that’s always a challenge to balance accessibility, connectivity and mindshare. I’ve never used ‘out of office’ replies, but that might not be a bad idea next time.
