Vista Display Settings

October 17th, 2007

This post is more for my own archiving, but others may benefit from it as well.

The Problem: I run a second monitor on the left side of my notebook, and I set the second monitor as the main monitor. The problem is that every time I log back into the computer using my password after the computer goes to screensaver, all my display settings revert to default with the notebook screen as the main screen and the second monitor on the right side.

The Solution: Found on a Microsoft Newsgroup, but slightly modified. The goal is to turn off TMM (Microsoft Transient Multi-Monitor Manager) when the computer logs on. I still want it to run on startup, so that the computer can know whether the second monitor is plugged in or not.

In the Start Menu right-click “Computer” & select “Manage”
On the left file tree click the down arrow next to “Task Scheduler” > “Task Scheduler Library” > “Microsoft” > “Windows” and double click “MobilePC”
Double Click “TMM” in the main window
Select the “Triggers” tab in the new window
Delete the “At log on” trigger
Click “New”
Click the drop down menu at the top of the new window. Select “At Startup” and click “OK”
Click “OK” to get out of the TMM window and you’re done.

heheh… i recently discovered that depending on the app i’m running, the external display settings can accommodate automatically. Example is that I was using Parallels and it automatically shifted the display arrangement to where I want it specifically for the Mac+Win combo. When I turn off Parallels, it went right back to normal! I was pleasantly surprised. heheh…

ohhhh… you didn’t just say the three letter M word??? Ohhhhh.. Actually, I don’t know what’s with all the Vista haters out there. I find it to be very stable and problem free except for this one issue. And now it’s solved. Way more all around compatibility than those computers with the symbols of original sin stamped on them!! :p
